In the 1966 film Jerry Maguire, Maguire writes what is suppose to be a company mission statement but it’s really his own because he wanted to be the me I always wanted to be.
In my work experience, mission statements aren’t taken very seriously by companies because they are usually written by the executives and none of the other employees have ownership. Maguire said people in business forget what was important. Writing a personal mission statement will remind you, at least what is important to you.
Connecting with your own purpose is fulfilling. For instance, if you live by your statement, there’s a good chance you’ll manage your time better because you are focusing on the important matters.
A personal mission statement addresses three questions:
- What is my life about?
- What do I stand for?
- What action am I taking to live what my life is about and what I stand for?
Your first step to writing your statement is to identify your past successes. Give at least four or five examples where you had personal success recently whether it be at work, at home or on the tennis courts.
Your next step is to list the characteristics that you think make you who you are and what are your priorities. You can call these your core values. One you have a list, see if you can narrow it down to five or six of the most important values.
Finally, select the one value that is most important to you.
You are on your way to writing your mission statement.
More on how to write a personal mission statement in my next post.
To your purposeful success,
