Market Your Services with Publicity

While revising the free book on publicity I offer my blog readers I noticed there were a few PR tactics that are seldom used anymore or aren’t used at all. The primary reason for their neglect is that they no longer work or at least they don’t work well.

One of the most obvious is mailed newsletter. These require a lot of work and they are expensive to mail. I am writing a newsletter for one of my clients but we publish it on line and invite readers to download and print the information if it has value for them.

Pitching stories to printed newspapers and reporters for those newspapers is also dying and justifiably so – there are so many fewer newspapers. If you want to pitch a story pitch it to the online version of a particular newspaper.

Media packets are used only on rare occasions, primarily when there’s a keynote speaker for a specific event and there’s a product or issue behind the event such as a new book or a new political cause.

In the meantime, don’t forget about using some of the try and true offline publicity tools that can be very effective especially when publicizing something local:

  • Flyers on supermarket bulleting boards;
  • Church bulletins;
  • Local newsletters;
  • Local shoppers;
  • Banners and signs;
  • Calendar listings on local cable TV channels.

Be sure to use your KEYWORDS whether you are marketing your service online or offline. Most professionals forget to use their keywords and then they may not use the right keywords in their press releases or tweets or when writing their blog posts. Keywords are your magnets; they draw in people, your traffic. When you write a press release use the keywords you found about your service.

For instance, if you teach golf to left handed golfers make sure you have something in your keywords that reads left-handed golfer for Google and the other search engines to find.
