Personal Mission Statements Identify Goals

What are your goals? How will you know when you get them?

You really do have your own solutions about what you’re going to do when you retire or how you’re going to remain productive in what you are already doing. The problem is you may not know how to discover them or you’re avoiding the answers. To make good choices and reasonable decisions you may just want to answer those 2 questions. Then write them down in your Personal Mission Statement.

Keep in mind that your mission statement is not written once in stone. Life changes. You change. Annually you need to take the time to review where you are, your career and job, your goals and your mission statement. It may be that your spouse is ill and requires more of your time.  A colleague of min had her daughter and 2 young children move in with her after her daughter’s divorce. This review may indicate you need to change and adapt your personal mission statement to the life you are leading now. Not to make changes will only lead to frustration!

A useful mission statement will include what you want to accomplish and contribute and who you want to be including the qualities you want to develop. Making a list of the ways you could make a difference in an ideal situation think about how could you contribute best to the world in general, your family, your business, and to friends and community.

Once you’ve made a list of how you could contribute, figure out your priorities in life and the goals you now have for yourself. Then divide those goals into short term goals and long term goals beyond three years.

Based on these steps and the first two steps described in my last blog – identifying your past successes and identifying your core values – you have a better understanding of yourself and can write your personal mission statement. .

There is no correct or incorrect statement as long as you are both authentic and honest. Now you are ready to make whatever career changes you want because you have your own yellow brick road.
Do you have a personal mission statement? If your answer is yes I am interested if you found it helpful and a good guide for your life and career.  My thinking is that maybe your positive responses will be good motivation for other readers. Let me know. Type your answer in the response for this blog post.  Thanks.
