Advice for Your Retirement

There are two myths about aging that become part of thinking about retirement. These are:

  1. what you believe is what you get;
  2. How you are treated by others matters.

I mention these because they go hand in hand with the belief that getting older means a person becomes less important and valuable. The fact is we all need to be esteemed and we all want to be happy, healthy and live a good, long life.

I also mention these basic myths because there are two tips about career change I want to share with you that may be unconventional but they are based on being esteemed and living a healthy lifestyle.

The first tip is to understand that each day you remain at the job you have that you don’t really love but the money is good, is putting you farther behind on your quest for financial independence during retirement. True, making a career change as you get older is harder: you have more to lose or you think the job is good enough.

Usually when clients focus on a job is good enough it means that the pay and benefits are good enough. Now think of what you’ve learned over the years. You’ve developed skills and the sooner you use those skills and learn new ones for your career change the better off you could be. You are actually missing out on a learning experience by not changing careers. And if you think about it, the financial risk of staying at a job where you are not continuing to learn could be greater than the financial risk of your career change.

My other tip is not to take the “Do What You Love and the Money will Follow” maxim too seriously. Every direct marketing sales pitch starts with that.

There is some truth that you will be more successful and motivated if your career involves doing something you enjoy. But reaching that success isn’t magical just because you like the business. There are too many factors involved in changing a career or starting a business all of which probably include doing some things you don’t like – such as keeping track of your books and paying bills or cleaning the bathroom.

I hope this makes sense to you and you give both of these tips some thoughts.

To your successful career change.
